Serato Library Doubled After a macOS Update? Here's the Fix

Last updated: 2026-10-26

You open Serato DJ, hit the Files panel, and your entire library appears twice. Every track, every crate, every carefully tagged edit — duplicated. This is one of the most common frustrations after a macOS update, and it usually has nothing to do with Serato itself.

Why the Library Doubles

When macOS updates, it can remount your music drive under a new volume path, or relocate your ~/Music/_Serato_ folder during a migration. Serato then reads the old database plus the newly indexed files and displays both. Cloud sync services like iCloud Drive or Dropbox re-downloading your library is another frequent culprit, since each downloaded copy gets scanned as a new file.

How to Clean It Up Safely

  1. Back up first. Copy your _Serato_ folder and music drive before touching anything.
  2. Check your drive path. In Serato, confirm the drive letter or volume name matches where your files actually live.
  3. Rescan from the correct location. Remove the phantom drive entry, then re-add the real one.
  4. Remove duplicate files. Use a duplicate finder to compare by audio fingerprint rather than filename, so remixes and edits with identical names stay intact.
  5. Rebuild crates if needed. Export crates to .crate files before deleting anything, so playlists survive the cleanup.

Prevent It Next Time

Keep your music on an external drive that macOS updates won't remount, pause cloud syncing during OS upgrades, and snapshot your Serato folder before every major update. If you want a cleaner way to spot and merge doubles across your library, Dupes scans your collection and flags true duplicates without breaking cue points or crate structure.

Ten minutes of prep beats a weekend of rebuilding crates.
