Same Song as MP3 and AIFF in Serato: Fix Duplicate Tracks

Last updated: 2026-10-19

If Serato shows the same song twice — once as an MP3 and once as an AIFF — you're not imagining it. This is one of the most common library issues DJs run into, and it usually comes from importing the same track in two formats over time. Maybe you ripped a CD to AIFF for a gig, then later grabbed the MP3 from a pool. Serato treats each file as a separate track, so both appear in your crates and search results.

Why Serato Shows Both Formats

Serato indexes files by their path, not by song title. An MP3 and an AIFF of the same track are two different files with two different paths, so Serato lists both. The metadata (title, artist, BPM) may look identical, but the underlying files aren't — which is why the duplicates don't merge automatically.

How to Spot the Duplicates

Sort your library by title and look for repeated names with different file extensions. You can also check the file type column, or use Serato's search to pull up a track and compare results. On large libraries this gets tedious fast, especially when tags differ slightly.

Cleaning Up Your Library

Decide which format you want to keep — AIFF for lossless quality, MP3 for smaller files — then remove the other from your Serato library and crates. Deleting from the library doesn't delete the file, so you can archive the extra copy safely. For a faster, more reliable way to find these format duplicates across your whole collection, try Dupes, which scans your library and flags matching tracks so you can keep one clean copy of every song.

Preventing Future Duplicates

Pick one format and stick to it when importing new music. Before adding a track, search your library first — a quick check saves you from re-importing the same song as a different file type later.
